STAUNTON — The Staunton Augusta Art Center celebrates the return of the 56th annual Art in the Park festival in Gypsy Hill Park over Labor Day weekend. As one of Virginia’s longest-running arts festivals, the family-friendly Art in the Park will feature the fine art and fine crafts of 80 local and regional artists.

Visitors are encouraged to admire and purchase artwork, chat with artists, and enjoy food provided by a variety of local vendors and food trucks. Aspiring young artists are welcome to participate in the children’s art activity area.

Local DJ Steve the Painter will be providing music at the event. Staunton’s only LOVEworks (Virginia is for ART Lovers!) will be featured prominently, inspiring selfies, family photos, and posts on social media, enduring memories of a fun-filled event.

As a non-profit arts organization, the Staunton Augusta Art Center will be selling raffle tickets for your dream vacation as a major fundraiser. Raffle tickets are $25 and puts you in the running for some exciting trips.

Golfing for the Boys and Girls Club

STAUNTON — The Great Futures Golf Tournament is set for Gypsy Hill Golf Course Friday, Aug. 25. The tournament benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Waynesboro, Staunton & Augusta County.

The organization delivers a variety of after-school and out-of-school enrichment opportunities to area children.

The cost to play is $400 per foursome or $100 per individual with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friday. There will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m. There will be door prizes, raffles and swag bags. A light lunch, dinner and adult beverages will be included in the cost.

The first-, second-, and third-place teams will all receive prizes. There will also be contests for a hole-in-ones, longest drives and closest to the pin. The hole-in-one competition features a Subaru Solterra as the prize.

Waynesboro vs. Staunton: Which is more worthy of being crowned 'Adventure Town?'

The Appalachian trail hikers and their "angels" who give them rides into this mountain town. The wide streets, the tree streets, the old churches, the hilly views. Theatre and art festivals and a great park. That's Waynesboro.

Blue Ridge Outdoors wants to name the top 4 Adventure Towns and you surely have the chance to vote. Waynesboro is one of the cities listed.

But who you gonna vote for? Because Staunton is also on the list.

The first round of voting ends Tuesday Aug. 22.

Tourism gets a BOOST in Waynesboro with grants

The city of Waynesboro awarded $15,000 in grants to tourism-related efforts taking place between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024.

The BOOST grants — “Building Opportunities to Support Tourism” — could be up to $3,000 and are for events, festivals, and initiatives intended to increase tourist traffic.

A four-person committee of city employees and a representative from the Virginia TourismCorporation made the final call, according to the city's press release. This year, $15,000 in totalfunding was awarded to seven applicants. The winners:

  • Fall Foliage Art Show

  • Lightwell Survey Winery

  • Virginia Reggae Freedom Festival
