Digital Saturday starts this week, brings new puzzles and features

As announced in January, starting this Saturday The Register-Guard's Saturday edition will be digital only.

Saturday, March 19, was the last day for home delivery of The Register-Guard. Now The R-G will provide subscribers with a full digital replica of the newspaper that day, filled with local news, advertising and features such as comics and puzzles. The new model means subscribers will get newspapers delivered to their home six days a week, with a digital newspaper available every day.

We once were solely a daily newspaper, but we have been transforming. We offer a digital site, mobile app, social media platforms, multimedia and more. While our print newspaper remains part of our strategy, we’re evolving to respond to how people consume news, such as on smartphones, tablets and computers.

Here are some of the added digital offering subscribers can access:

Universal e-Edition access: Subscribers can access more than 200 USA TODAY Network publications through their e-Editions. Simply go to your e-edition (registerguard.com/eedition) and select the Universal icon on the right rail. From there, you can choose a publication to read. This access is available through the desktop or e-Edition app. As a reminder, the electronic edition of USA TODAY is also available every day as a bonus section.

New national sections: New to the e-Edition are two daily sections –– Nation & World Extra and Sports Extra. This content will be part of the e-Edition pages but also can be found in the Bonus section. News in these sections will not be found in the corresponding day’s printed newspaper due to the lateness of the news and print deadlines. Nation & World Extra is now appearing with every morning's e-edition, and Sports Extra, the companion section with late sports scores and agate, will launch this Saturday.

Share your digital access: As a subscriber, you can share your subscription with a friend or family member. They will receive their own login and can access it as long as you remain a subscriber. Go to account.registerguard.com and make sure you are logged in (in the top right corner, you should see a button labeled "Hi *your name*” if you are already logged in. If not, click on the button for “Sign In”). Next, select your name and go to “Manage Account." In the left-hand menu, look for “Share digital subscription." Click on that and enter the name and email address of the person to share access. An email will be sent to their inbox with further instructions on setting up their own credentials.

How to: Now you can find even more in The Register-Guard e-Edition

As part of this transition, readers will see some other changes to The R-G print and e-Edition beginning this Saturday.

Puzzles, advice, TV and horoscope features will be in a new, daily “entertainment center,” that’s been redesigned in a new, easy-to-read format.

With this redesign we will gain new puzzles — such as the LA Times Crossword, Scrabblegram, International Word Find, KenKen and Celeb Cipher — and new features. We’ll be adding Frank Stewart’s Bridge column and What to Watch TV and movie columns. Also, you won’t have to wait until the next day to find answers — answers will be online at answers.usatoday.com. We’ll also lose some features, including the daily NYT Crossword (the Sunday NYT Crossword remains), HocusFocus and the daily TV grid.

Our Opinion page will appear in the Sunday, Wednesday and Friday editions starting this Saturday. We continue to welcome community members to share their points of view through letters to the editor and guest columns. Readers will still find local Opinion content at registerguard.com/opinion.

To make the most of your subscription, I encourage you to go to registerguard.com and activate your digital account and explore the e-Edition and our new features. It also gives you access to our local content that’s only available to subscribers. If you have trouble along the way, you can call customer service at 1-800-377-7428 or email customerservice@registerguard.com. To find more details, you can go to help.registerguard.com to find a variety of ways to get assistance.

One final thing to note: Our news and sales staffing at The Register-Guard will not change as a result of this. Our staff who live in this community with you are dedicated to providing the community with local journalism.
