Digitized newspapers are available

Nov. 10—The Creston Historical Preservation Commission announces the completion of their 2023 Historical Preservation Project. Most of the county newspapers were not digitized and made available for free access to the public.

The project was to start digitizing the existing newspapers in Union County and post the link of the website through our county library so those interested could access and search for information in the county's early newspapers.

Creston Historic Preservation Commission was awarded two grants, one from South Central Iowa Foundation and a grant from the Historical Resource Development Program. A small amount of money came from the Creston Historical Preservation Commission Budget. The commission was able to have newspapers digitized from 1880s to 1925s.

Afton and Creston newspapers were photographed and made searchable by Advantage Preservation in Cedar Rapids. Earlier, Tony Mercer of Ringgold County, had Arispe and Shannon City newspapers of that time period digitized through Advantage.

The Creston Historic Preservation Commission will be offering a workshop at the Gibson Memorial Library in Creston to learn how to access and use the Union County digitized newspaper. The workshop, Navigating Through Union County Newspapers, will be 6:30 p.m., Nov. 29 in the Genealogy Room in the library. There is no cost of admission.

There are future plans to complete all of newspapers printed beyond 1925. This would include Creston, Afton, and newly found Lorimor and Shannon City newspapers. For more information call (641) 202-8734.
