DIMONDALE — An 18-year-old woman, a native of Jackson County, was shot and killed at a home in the village early Thursday morning, according to the Michigan State Police.

Police found her at a home in the 100 block of Cherry Street at approximately 5 a.m., State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez said. At the request of her family, police officials are not releasing her name, he said.

Police believe Jeremy Arthur Wood, 24, who lived at the home with his mother, shot and killed the woman early Thursday before leaving the residence and taking his own life with a handgun in a neighbor's yard, Gonzalez said.

Wood and the woman were in a relationship, Gonzalez said. Police are investigating the incident as a homicide, he said.

Police responded to the home after Wood's mother called 911 to report a gunshot, he said. Police arrived to find the body of the woman in the home, he said.

Police "went out of the residence to attempt to locate the suspect who was also threatening suicide," Gonzalez said. "As they were out looking for them, they heard a gunshot."

Police searched the area and found Wood dead, he said.

A shelter-in-place order was issued to residents "in the area of Bridge and Washington" just before 6 a.m. on Thursday. It was lifted about 20 minutes later.
