Tonight, on the eve of Art Basel Miami, Kim Jones presented Dior Men’s pre-fall 2020 collection with a characteristically effervescent display. Across the street from the new Rubell Museum in Allapattah, the venue was lined with a rainbow of old-school American cars, and inside, the neon green runway was saturated in graffiti-style logos designed by streetwear legend Shawn Stussy.

Given the show’s pre-Basel timing and the eternal vibrancy of its host city, it was only natural that bursts of color be woven through the collection. Furthering the painterly motif above the neck, 13 of the models had swathes of retina-burning chartreuse on the eyes, designed to peak out from underneath the floral-print berets and bucket hats, designed by Stephen Jones, to futuristic effect. “It’s cyber-surfer,” explained makeup artist Peter Philips as he used a handheld Temptu Air device to spray fluorescent lime green pigment across the eyes in the style of 1982 sci-fi noir film Blade Runner, name-checking Daryl Hannah’s character Pris Stratton as his inspiration. “It’s the same color as the set—[very] chemical,” he explained of the verdant hue, which he created by meticulously mixing blue, yellow, and white paints together to match the show’s beaming set.

The shock of color was pared back with groomed brows, glowing skin enhanced with Dior Backstage Face & Body Foundation, and lips coated in a supercharged slick of Lip Maximizer in 001 Pink. “The boys love it!” said Philips, with a grin, blotting away the translucent gloss with a tissue. Adding to the “surfer” vibe, hairstylist Guido Palau created a “wet, disheveled” texture by running Redken Argan-6 Multi-Care Oil through lengths, then blasting them with high-shine hairspray for a “glistening” finish. Whether he’s the type to catch waves at Boynton Beach or traversing a distant dystopian future, there’s a beauty note for every kind of man this season.
