Directions Credit Union donated $3,000 to the Monroe County Library System to purchase summer reading prize books.

The contribution helped purchase approximately 1,900 books, which will be given away to children who complete a summer reading log.

Also this summer, children who show a completed MCLS reading at Directions Credit Union will receive a $5 deposit into the child's Directions Youth Savings account.

“At Directions, we believe supporting summer reading programs is a great fit with our mission. The purpose of a credit union is to help people. We exist for the benefit our member-owners, many of whom are current or former educators. We want to promote financial education, not just sell products," Barry Shaner, president and CEO of Directions Credit Union, said.

“It brings us great joy to collaborate with Directions Credit Union for the third year in a row. Providing books to children is an invaluable gift, and we appreciate their commitment to supporting literacy in our community," Nancy Bellaire, library director, said.

The library's 2023 summer reading program, with the theme of "All Together Now," begins June 20. A series of interactive programs will promote literacy, encourage socialization and help counter the summer slide, the library system said.  Weekly events include stories, art experiences and STEM activities.  Complete details are available at mymcls.com/summer-reading.

Directions membership is open to those who live, work, worship, attend school or volunteer in Monroe or Lenawee counties and several counties in Ohio. Directions Credit Union has two branches in southeast Michigan: 15470 S. Telegraph Road in Monroe and 3558 W. Sterns Road in Lambertville.
