Director Destin Daniel Cretton will return for 'Shang-Chi' sequel

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” will be coming back with Destin Daniel Cretton set to direct and write its sequel.

“Shang-Chi” 2: In addition to leading the sequel, Cretton signed an exclusive multi-year contract with Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective to develop a new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series for Disney Plus, according to Deadline.

  • The original movie has had substantial success and is currently the highest-grossing domestic feature at over $224 million as well as the eighth highest-grossing film internationally at over $431 million in 2021, according to Variety.


  • “Destin is a powerhouse storyteller with impeccable taste in material. As we continue to expand our roster, Destin’s unique voice will help usher in an exciting slate of content for our global audience,” Freeform & Onyx Collective President Tara Duncan said.

  • There is no other information on the Maui-born, award-winning filmmaker’s new Marvel series, but Variety sources say that it will be a comedy. Cretton will also found a production company by the name of Family Owned with film producer Asher Goldstein. The filmmakers will produce film and TV projects that focus on overlooked and marginalized community experiences.

  • “Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ We had a fantastic time working together on the film, and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney Plus, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started,” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said.
