Dirt, grease, grime and slime restaurants have severe violations in Myrtle Beach SC area

Each week inspectors from SC Department of Health and Environmental Control perform unannounced routine food safety inspections.

The inspectors are checking various things, most importantly food safety at Myrtle Beach area restaurants, grocery stores, retail meat markets, bakeries, delis, school cafeterias seafood markets and convenience stores.

When a restaurant is out of compliance in a routine inspection it is noted on a SC Food Grade report and the establishment has a follow-up inspection within ten days to correct the violations.

This week inspectors found the following violations at these area establishments.

5 restaurants had follow-up inspections from the week of May 29 - June 2

  1. Deroma’s Pizzeria located at 10025 Ocean Highway, Unit 334, Pawleys Island, had a routine inspection on June 9 and received 100 percent “A” grade.

  2. Pizza De Roma located at 806 N. Oak St., Myrtle Beach, had a follow-up inspection on June 9 and received 97 percent “A” grade.

  3. Saigon Cafe Restaurant located at 1943-A Mr. Joe White Ave., Myrtle Beach, had a follow-up inspection on June 2 and scored 75 percent “C” grade. (from the week of May 22- May 26) m

  4. Saigon Cafe Restaurant located at 1943-A Mr. Joe White Ave., Myrtle Beach, had a second follow-up inspection on June 9 and scored 100 percent “A” grade.

  5. Wild Wing Plantation located at 1000 Wild Wing Plantation, Conway, had a follow-up inspection on June 9 and scored 97 percent “A” grade.

The following restaurants had unannounced routine inspections this week June 5 - June 9

  1. Between The Antlers located at 100 Wood St., Georgetown, had a routine inspection on June 7 and scored 70 percent “C” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Inspection Report listed the following: “Hand washing observed in prep sink. Hand sinks observed storing fan and a bucket and a dry packet of gravy. Potato slicer observed with food debris and build up. Ice machine observed with mildew/pink slime build up on the deflector plate. Spray bottles observed not stored in their original container not labeled with the common name of the material. Working containers of food that are not in their original containers and not easily identifiable with a common name - such as oils, flour, herbs, potato flakes, salt, spices and sugar. Drain flies observed around the floor/cardboard drink syrups near ice machine. Flies observed throughout the kitchen, observed landing on prep surfaces, self service items and aprons. Commercial pest control invoice from May observed. Single service items under bug light. 3 compartment sink sanitizer basin observed with towel as a drain stopper.” A follow-up inspection will be performed within 10 days.

  2. Daddios located at 4480 Mineola Ave., Little River, had a routine inspection on June 6 and scored 85 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Inspection Report Inspection Report listed the following: “ Observed shrimp salad, slaw, and meat loaf in refrigerator without date marking. Observed presence of rodent droppings in kitchen and roaches in kitchen. Observed grease accumulation on sides of cook line equipment and grease accumulation on lower walls.” A follow-up inspection will be performed within 10 days.

  3. Golden China Restaurant located at 1867 S.C. 544 Unit-A, Conway had a routine inspection on June 5 and scored 83 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Inspection Report listed the following: “Water observed being dumped in hand sink. Scouring pad and containers observed being stored in hand sink. Eye drops observed stored on shelving, above prep table and prep cooler. Flies observed throughout the facility, landing on prep surfaces and single service items. Soiled/wet wiping cloths observed stored on prep surfaces and not stored inside an approved sanitizer concentration. Bag observed being used to absorb grease from fried foods. Hood filters observed with grease build up.” A follow-up inspection will be performed within 10 days.

  4. Island Bar & Grill located at 10744 Ocean Hwy., Pawleys Island had a routine inspection on June 5 and scored 74 percent “C” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Inspection Report listed the following: “Hand washing cleanser not available at bar. Hand drying provisions not available at bar and in kitchen. No probe thermometer. Back door observed to not be tight fitting. Knives stored in crack of raw wood shelf. Cutting board stored on floor within 12” splash area of hand sink. Raw wood observed above prep top. Raw wood needs to be sealed with a high gloss finish. Cardboard observed on surface being used for prep. Legs of equipment in poor repair and wood being used to stabilize flat top. Grease accumulation on sides of equipment. Floors have grease accumulation under equipment and in corners and edges of equipment.” A follow-up inspection will be performed within 10 days.

  5. Parlor Doughnuts and Coffee located at 11359 Ocean Hwy., Pawleys Island had a routine inspection on June 7 and scored 85 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found by inspectors according to the SC Food Grade Report. The Retail Food Establishment Inspection Report listed the following: “ Employee observed cleaning gloved hand with dry towel and picking up cell phone. No hand washing observed between tasks. Heavy cream observed being discarded in hand sink on service line. Toxic materials observed not stored in their original container not labeled with the common name of the material. Egg slicer observed being stored down on eggs. Soiled wiping cloths observed stored on prep surfaces and not stored inside an approved sanitizer concentration. Drain board at mechanical dish machine observed not sealed to the wall. Chemical based sanitizer testing devices not available for testing.” - A follow-up inspection was performed on June 9 and a score of 99 percent “A” grade was achieved according to The Retail Food Establishment Inspection Report.

“INSPECTION KEY”

A | 100 - 88 - The retail food establishment earned more than 87 points. Food safety practices appeared to meet the requirements of Regulation 61-25.

B | 87 - 78 - The retail food establishment earned 78-87 points. Food safety practices need improvement.

C | 77 & Below - The retail establishment earned less than 78 points. Food safety practices need significant improvement.

R | Indicates a Routine Inspection - Unannounced and conducted on a frequency determined by the facility’s Risk Category on a frequency of one to four times a year.

F | Indicates a Follow-Up Inspection - Conducted within 10 days of a Routine Inspection that requires follow-up verification.
