Dirty Shirley is the drink of the summer. Here's where to find it at the Shore

On Main Street in Asbury Park, not far from the boardwalk, a green and black building and flashing sign welcome patrons to R Bar.

On the bar's hidden menu is one of its most well-received drinks: "The Shirley Temple of Doom," R Bar's unique twist on a Dirty Shirley. The cocktail is an alcoholic version of the Shirley Temple, which traditionally is made with grenadine and Sprite. The addition of vodka makes it a "Dirty Shirley."

At R Bar, a different version of the drink is served. Theirs is made with lemon, lime, club soda and housemade grenadine and spiked with tequila and mezcal.

"It's very rare for you to have just one," co-owner Kelly Victor said.

"It was just kind of natural, playing with the lemon and the lime as opposed to the Sprite," said Lindsey Taylor, the bar's co-owner and the architect behind the drink. "... We wanted to make it fun so we put tequila, and when you put 'doom' into a title, you have to do a little mezcal."

As a result of customer response and the Dirty Shirley's rise in popularity, "The Shirley Temple of Doom" will be added to R Bar's regular drink menu.

Forget fancy cocktails:These Jersey Shore bars are fun without the fuss

"This summer is the first summer I've ever had Dirty Shirleys requested," said Greg Schaefer, bar manager at Watermark in Asbury Park.

Schaefer said one of the reasons the Dirty Shirley is becoming popular is because it is traditionally simplistic, only needing three ingredients and some ice to satisfy.

Watermark does not offer a Dirty Shirley on its cocktail menu, but like many bars and restaurants, the drink is available upon request.

If you want a traditional Dirty Shirley, here are a few spots to get one.

Langosta Lounge, Asbury Park

Langosta Lounge, located right on the boardwalk, has seen the boom in Dirty Shirleys in recent months and fully embraced it.

Before this summer, if a customer ordered a Dirty Shirley, a bartender or waiter had to put in an order for a Shirley Temple then add an upcharge for the vodka, bar manager Steve Barrantes said. But with the huge spike he has seen in requests, he added a Dirty Shirley option into the ordering system.

Langosta Lounge, which offers indoor and outdoor seating, has a diverse Caribbean-Fusion menu that includes dishes like lobster mac and cheese and lobster enchiladas, plus an assortment of other classic seafood and sushi dishes.

Teak, Red Bank

Every year, Teak bar manager Eddie Sunday chooses his drink of the summer. This summer, it is the Dirty Shirley.

(He drinks them so often that he thought he was being pranked by friends when The Asbury Park Press reached out for this story.)

Made with Ketlel One vodka, Sunday describes Teak's Dirty Shirley as "a popular drink for anyone who wants something sweet."

Teak is known for its Asian fusion menu: A plate of spiced calamari, Asian Caesar salad, grilled salmon or any of the restaurant's signature sushi rolls would pair with a Dirty Shirley.

Hooks Bar & Grill, Seaside Heights

Hooks has occasional live music, a variety of games including darts, air hockey and billiards, and an outdoor patio, all of which make for a casual bar option in Seaside Heights.

General manager Bill Morrisey encourages customers to "come to Hooks and enjoy a nice Dirty Shirley with your favorite vodka on the patio."

Hooks serves a variety of classic bar food, but the blackened mahi tacos and sesame-crusted tuna are among the most popular, Morrisey said. He also recommends the Hooks Mountain Melt, saying "we don't play around here at Hooks" when describing the dish made with cheese fries, Buffalo chicken tenders, bacon and scallions.

A popular bar on Main Street, Johnny Mac House of Spirits is a known spot for many locals and provides Dirty Shirleys along with almost anything else you need for a night at the bar.

Johnny Mac's is a favorite due to its indoor and outdoor bars, party atmosphere, theme nights and Skee-Ball (always fun for a bar to have some games).

Ark Pub & Eatery, Point Pleasant Beach

Ark Pub & Eatery is another bar that has noticed a growth in demand for Dirty Shirley's in recent months.

"I feel like with Instagram and stuff they'll (people) see them (Dirty Shirley's) and they'll all get them," says Nick Roger, the bar manager at Ark.

Ark has more than 100 different beers, including 16 on tap and places an emphasis on using local sources for its food and drinks, according to its website.

Roger says patrons often pair a Dirty Shirley with the bar's award winning burgers. In addition to its burgers, Ark sells a plethora of classic bar appetizers, as well as a variety of different steak and seafood dishes.
