NORTH  PORT – A Disaster Medical Assistance Team set up a tent hospital Wednesday in North Port in the parking lot of a vacant medical office building near the intersection of Sumter Boulevard and Tamiami Trail.

A federal team of about 60 doctors, nurses, physician assistants, paramedics and pharmacists are providing services that would otherwise be rendered through Sarasota Memorial Hospital’s North Port Emergency Room, which was closed after being severely damaged by Hurricane Ian.

Medical professionals are treating patients with minor injuries on site, while ambulance teams are transporting those more severely injured to area hospitals.

The tent hospitals are operated under the auspices of the Department of Health and Human Services as part of the National Disaster Medical System.

The North Port facility, which is roughly twice the size of one established earlier this week on the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Venice campus, is being staffed by medical professionals from Arkansas and Oklahoma.

The Venice facility is staffed by medical professionals from Massachusetts.
