Discount airline carrier adding new routes at Rochester airport

Discount airline carrier Avelo Airlines will add nonstop flights from Rochester to Spartanburg, South Carolina and also expand service between Rochester and Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina.

The new route between Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport and South Carolina's Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport will operate twice weekly starting May 9, according to a news release from Avelo Airlines.

The discount carrier is the first and only airline to offer nonstop service between Rochester and northern South Carolina, according to the news release.

"ROC – Avelo is growing," said Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy, noting that the airline carrier is excited to add nonstop service between Rochester and Greenville/Spartanburg. "Whether visiting friends and family or enjoying a leisurely vacation, Avelo offers time and money-saving convenience for customers," he said.

The new nonstop flights will operate on Thursdays and Sundays, using Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft.

"Like Monroe County and the Finger Lakes, the Greenville-Spartanburg area is home to an abundance of outdoor recreational attractions, unique dining, shopping and entertainment venues, and access to major colleges and universities," Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said in a news release. "You can feel the synergy between our two communities, and we hope that this new nonstop service will bring out more partnerships and travel opportunities for our residents.”

Also, as of May 2, Avelo Airlines will double its frequency of flights to North Carolina's Research Triangle with additional flights to the Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Curently, nonstop flights travel between the two airports twice weekly. Starting May 2, flights between Rochester and Raleigh-Durham will be offered on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, according to the carrier's website.

The airline is offering introductory one-way fares between Rochester and Greenville-Spartanburg, starting at $62. Customers can make reservations at AveloAir.com

The Houston-based discount airline carrier started flying to and from the Rochester airport last June.

Founded in April 2021, Avelo has flown more than 4 million customers on more than 30,000 flights, according to the company.

Avelo flies to more than 40 locations in the continental United States. In New York, Avelo services three airports - Rochester, Albany and Binghamton.
