Discovery Place in Charlotte and Huntersville welcomes people as they get ready for the solar eclipse
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Some students may be on spring break, but there are a lot of valuable lessons to learn at Discovery Place about an event that doesn’t happen often.
We’re just days away from the sky going dark due to a solar eclipse. Workers at Discovery Place in Uptown and Huntersville are teaching lessons about the different types of solar eclipses.
There are also other areas to learn about the path of totality and be able to do hands-on experiments like creating a pinhole viewer.
This is all leading up to a watch party on the rooftop of the Discovery Place parking garage.

“A solar eclipse is definitely a grand spectacle, everyone should try to see it,” said George Booth, experience specialist with Discovery Place. “They don’t come around too often, we’ve been really lucky in the last seven years to have two in the United States, but the next one is not going to be for 20 years. We’re really excited here at the museum, and we’ve got a bunch of awesome experiences to go along with it.”
People paying admission for the watch party will receive a pair of solar eclipse glasses while supplies last. You can also purchase a pair at the Discovery Place gift shop. Booth reminds people if they are purchasing glasses to make sure they are certified.
“You can check on the label to make sure they are certified and another way you can tell is if you put them on, you shouldn’t be able to see anything,” added Booth. “You’ll only be able to see the sun.” For a list of events, check them out here.
