A Discovery of Witches has recast a major role with a The Last Kingdom star for season 3.

Following "scheduling conflicts" caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Trystan Gravelle is "unable to continue" in his role as senior vampire Baldwin de Clermont for the forthcoming season.

Instead, he will be replaced by Irish actor Peter McDonald, who played Brother Trew in The Last Kingdom season 2.

"Due to scheduling conflicts arising from COVID-19, the wonderful Trystan Gravelle was unable to continue as Baldwin Montclair for season three," a spokesperson for the show told RadioTimes.com.

"However, he has handed the baton to the fantastic Peter McDonald who we're sure you'll absolutely love as the intimidating head of the de Clermont family."

As well as The Last Kingdom, Peter also appeared in Dublin Murders and No Offence and recently starred opposite Carey Mulligan in Netflix film The Dig.

"I'm delighted to be taking the role of Baldwin de Clermont into season 3 of A Discovery of Witches," Peter added. "I'm relishing the opportunity to tell this story with all the cast and crew at Bad Wolf Productions."

As Matthew's older brother, he reluctantly helped defend Matthew (Matthew Goode) and Diana's (Teresa Palmer) burgeoning romance in season 1 and featured in a lesser capacity in season 2 during clashes with Marcus (Edward Bluemel).

While it's not known which project his A Discovery of Witches role clashed with, Trystan is currently filming a part for Amazon's new The Lord of the Rings series.

Meanwhile, Peter's casting follows Mission: Impossible – Fallout actor Olivier Huband being cast as Portuguese vampire Fernando Gonçalves in season 3.

A Discovery of Witches series 2 is available on Sky and NOW TV – and for those that prefer linear viewing, it will air on Sky One weekly on Fridays at 9pm.

In the US, series 2 launches new episodes every Saturday on Sundance Now, Shudder and AMC+.
