DISH Network's(NASDAQ:DISH) Share Price Is Down 34% Over The Past Five Years.

DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 13% in the last month. But over the last half decade, the stock has not performed well. After all, the share price is down 34% in that time, significantly under-performing the market.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the unfortunate half decade during which the share price slipped, DISH Network actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 14% per year. So it doesn't seem like EPS is a great guide to understanding how the market is valuing the stock. Or possibly, the market was previously very optimistic, so the stock has disappointed, despite improving EPS.

Due to the lack of correlation between the EPS growth and the falling share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movement.

The revenue decline of 2.9% isn't too bad. But if the market expected durable top line growth, then that could explain the share price weakness.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective

DISH Network shareholders are down 4.3% for the year, but the market itself is up 45%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 6% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We would want clear information suggesting the company will grow, before taking the view that the share price will stabilize. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand DISH Network better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for DISH Network (of which 1 doesn't sit too well with us!) you should know about.
