Dismembered body parts discovered in Chicago suburb, police say

The dismembered remains of a woman turned up inside of luggage in the suburbs of Chicago on Tuesday, officials said.

Authorities in Markham, Ill., said the body parts were transported by a man on a Greyhound bus from Kentucky to Chicago, according to WBBM-TV.

When the man hauled his luggage to his family’s home in Markham, Ill., he never unpacked the suitcases, prompting suspicion before family members went ahead and opened them, according to WBBM.

“A human body part was discovered,” Markham Police Chief Terry White said, according to the news station. “They immediately backed away and called police.”

Cops said Melvin Martin Jr., 30, will be charged as a fugitive fleeing prosecution, WLS-TV reported. The victim was Martin’s 31-year-old girlfriend in Louisville, Ky., authorities said.

Markham sits about 25 miles south of downtown Chicago.
