Disney might be more famous for its animated features, but anyone who grew up in the ‘80s will tell you that their childhood was more magical thanks to Walt Disney Television Animation and the Wonderful World of Disney.

Adventures of the Gummi Bears

You probably remember the theme song from this show, mostly because it’s just so catchy. But the show itself is a fun medieval fantasy with colorful, adorable characters, frenetic action and a surprisingly deep backstory for a cartoon inspired by candy.

Find every episode on Disney+, including season 6 — which you might have originally missed out on (as I did), because it often aired before some of us got home from school.

Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers

Instead of continuing to bedevil poor Donald Duck, this cartoon puts the troublemaking chipmunks in charge of their own detective agency, solving crimes for their fellow animals (and the occasional human). Chip gets to be cool in a bomber jacket and fedora à la Indiana Jones, while Dale is a real goof in a Hawaiian shirt (like Magnum P.I.).

But the supporting cast is also a delight, between the adventurous Monterey Jack, Zipper and of course, the inventive Gadget. With beauty and brains, who wouldn’t have a crush on her?

DuckTales

If you aren’t familiar with DuckTales, you probably weren’t a child in the ‘80s and ‘90s and should get caught up. This is the show that really got the ball rolling for Disney’s television animation department, running for 100 episodes in syndication and spawning a feature-length film (also on Disney+), several video games and an excellent reboot that I dare say is better than the original.

But the original is still worth checking out, with plenty of treasure hunting, Beagle Boys and time travel to keep the Duck family busy.

The Muppet Show

This is the show that really introduced the Muppets to the world and captured hearts — as well as four Emmys over its four-year run. Most of that was in the ‘70s, but it ran until 1981 and was omnipresent on cable throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s.

It’s a timeless show, and there are so many classic sketches you should revisit, from ‘Pigs in Space’ to the Swedish Chef, Statler and Waldorf in the balcony, and episodes with surprising guests like Luke Skywalker and his 'cousin' Mark Hamill.

The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Yet another Disney cartoon with an insanely catchy theme song, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh aired on Saturday mornings and you might have missed out on it completely — I remember it being on way too early for me to catch.

Each episode was a completely new half-hour adventure from the Hundred Acre Wood, and all were rather good-natured and comforting like a warm blanket. All the characters got a bunch of screen time here, making it a perfect show for fans of Rabbit, Kanga, Roo and even gloomy ol’ Eeyore.

Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends

This wasn’t originally a Disney cartoon, and it shows in the stilted animation and voice acting. But there’s still something charming about old superhero cartoons.

And this is one of those rare instances where you got to see characters from multiple franchises interact, with Spider-Man joined by Iceman of the X-Men and Firestar, a character that has yet to appear in any live-action Marvel TV or movies. Maybe it’s time to bring her back, Disney!
