New 'Ms. Marvel' trailer shows off latest addition to NJ's superhero legacy

Marvel has a new superhero coming to streaming. And this one is the Garden State's very own.

"It's not really the brown girls from Jersey City who save the world," Kamala Khan says in the new trailer that debuted this week for "Ms. Marvel," Marvel's latest show coming to Disney+.

Khan was first introduced in comics in 2013. A Pakistani American, Khan is Marvel's first Muslim superhero to headline a comic book, using the name Ms. Marvel. And she just happens to hail from Hudson County.

In the comics, Khan is a teenager living in Jersey City who idolizes Carol Danvers, better known as Captain Marvel. The character was created by Marvel editors and writers including Sana Amanat and G. Willow Wilson, both New Jersey natives.

In the new show, which will premiere in June, Khan is played by Iman Vellani, in her screen debut. The trailer features Vellani as Khan discovering her superpowers while also trying to navigate the high school experience. The final shot of the trailer sees her sitting atop a light pole, looking across the Hudson River at the New York City skyline.

'Ms. Marvel' will hit Disney+ on June 8, 2022.

Though "Ms. Marvel" is set to make history for Marvel, it's not the first time the comic book giant has made its way over to Jersey.

The hit show "WandaVision" took place in fictional Westview, New Jersey, as two superhero leads tried to fit into a plain suburban community — with some twists, of course. In the comic books series on which the show is based, Wanda and Vision actually bought a home in Leonia.

And that's not all. Janet Van Dyne, or Wasp, is from Cresskill. Villain Mister Hyde is from Trenton. The Defenders use a house in Montclair as their home base for a time. The fictional Wheaton, New Jersey, appears in “Captain America” as the location of Camp Lehigh. Peggy Carter visits Cedar Grove in an episode of “Agent Carter.” Jessica Jones supposedly lived in Caldwell with her parents. And in "Avengers: Endgame" Tony Stark visits the union's third state, albeit in 1970, in a crucial scene where he retrieves the tesseract.

And now with "Ms. Marvel" set to make waves in the streaming world, New Jersey looks set for another starring role.
