The ride is a replacement for and a remodeling of Splash Mountain, which closed in January 2023.
The new attraction will feature dozens of new animatronic figures, including ones for Tiana, Naveen, Louis, Mama Odie, Prince Ralphie and others, Disney says. In a video released Tuesday, Imagineer Charita Carter showed off the Tiana animatronic in action backstage. The standing figure waved her arms and turned at the hips; there was no audio. The figure is dressed in pants, part of a previously announced adventure costume.
Originally, Disney said Tiana’s Bayou Adventure would debut in late 2024. Disneyland is also getting the Tiana ride; an opening season was not announced for California on Tuesday, but there remained reference to “later in 2024.”
The ride’s dramatic drop/photo op, visible from dry ground, has been retained.
“I can’t wait to ride a log down that 50-foot drop again as part of an all-new story to love,” Sarah Riles, vice president of Magic Kingdom, wrote in a post on the official Disney Parks Blog.
Known renovations to the ride include the addition of greenery around the drop, a water tower topped with a tiara, a New Orleans-inspired soundtrack and a storyline that takes place after the events of Disney’s 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog.”
“In Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, she’s throwing a festive party during Mardi Gras season to thank her family, friends and the entire community for all the support they’ve given her as a successful business owner,” Riles wrote. “It’s incredibly special that we get to celebrate with her.”
Disney World is also in the midst of revamping its Country Bear Jamboree attraction, a Frontierland neighbor of Bayou Adventure. It is scheduled to reopen this summer.
The Tiana ride will be the first major addition to Magic Kingdom since Tron Lightcycle / Run, an indoor-outdoor roller coaster, opened in Tomorrowland in spring 2023.
