Disney has unveiled the first trailer for Doogie Kameāloha, M.D., the reboot to the classic series Doogie Howser, M.D., that featured How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris as a young physician when he was just a fresh faced young star.

The new version stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee as Lahela 'Doogie' Kameāloha, a teenage prodigy who starts her medical career early and is nicknamed Doogie as a reference to Howser, which is treated as a show within a show here.

Fans will likely know Lee from her role as Andi Mack in Disney Channel's groundbreaking series of the same name, which came from the mind of Lizzie McGuire creator Terri Minsky and was renowned for featuring Disney Channel's first gay main character, in a storyline that won awards and achieved huge ratings for how it portrayed coming out.

That series also stars Jeffrey-Bowyer Chapman, who you'll know from LGBTQ+ horror film Spiral and being a judge on season 1 of Canada's Drag Race. Jason Scott Lee, from 1994's The Jungle Book and 2020's Mulan, and I Am Not Okay with This' Kathleen Rose Perkins also star as Doogie's parents.

The trailer shows us that the drama centres around Doogie struggling to balance saving lives and being treated as an adult in a very serious professional environment with trying to live a normal teenage life and go on dates with cute boys.

There's also the fact that her boss in the hospital is also her mother, so there's a lot of clashing going on there.

Overall though, this looks like a pretty easy going series that you can chill out to. And its September 8 release date means it's a perfect blast of sun and sand to distract from the fact it's going to get colder and darker soon.

Doogie Kameāloha, MD will be available exclusively on Disney+.
