Disney+ has cancelled fantasy series Willow.

According to Deadline, the streaming platform has decided not to produce a second season of the show, which followed on from the events of director Ron Howard's 1988 film of the same name.

The cancellation comes just two months after season one concluded, as both Lucasfilm and Disney are said to be considering future creative output.

The series had seen Warwick Davis reprise his leading role as Ufgood from the films. Set 20 years after the defeat of the evil Queen Bavmorda, the show followed Willow as he led a new group of heroes on a mission into the unknown together.

Davis was joined by Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel, Dempsey Bryk, Joanne Whalley and Tony Revolori.

The cancellation news comes just months after Davis shared his thoughts on the prospect of a second season of Willow. He told Digital Spy that he would be "excited" to reprise the role again.

"I'm excited to go back. Of course, I would. But let's just see," Davis said.

"If the audience supports us with this, then I'd be happy to put the wig on again and get my staff out and start doing some more magic."

Meanwhile, series creator Jonathan Kasdan revealed that he felt the series was able to expand on the fantasy world created in the original film.

"What had struck me so much about the movie when I was a kid was the scale that [film creator] George [Lucas] conveyed. And he had much more limited tools to do that in 1988 than we do now," he told Digital Spy.

"We have cityscapes and worlds beyond anything that could have been achieved in 1988 that really represent an outgrowing of this planet that I was excited to build."
