Small plane makes emergency landing in field near Ravenna

MOORLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — No one was injured when a small plane had to perform an emergency landing in a field northeast of Ravenna on Wednesday, authorities say.

The plane — a fixed wing, single-engine Cessna 172 Skyhawk — landed around 11:30 a.m. near the intersection of S. Swanson Road and E. Apple Avenue in Moorland Township.

Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Lisa Freres said an instructor and student from a Sparta-area flight school were practicing flying at slower speeds when the plane had some engine trouble. They couldn’t recover, she said, and were forced to land in the field.

Freres said emergency crews didn’t immediately know exactly where the plane ended up.

“The tower was trying to figure out exactly where the plane dropped off radar at, so there was some communication between our tower and Muskegon County and some neighboring airports,” she said.

They soon worked out where the plane should be and deputies found it. The people inside were uninjured.

“Pretty good outcome, overall,” Freres said.

The plane did not sustain any damage, but it could not take off again, the sergeant said. The Federal Aviation Administration was helping to organize help to get it out of the field.

The plane comes back as registered to the owner of Sparta Aviation Flight Training.
