Dispatches from Douglas County: An adventuring pair, a councilor resigns and our all-area volleyball team
Nov. 18—SUPERIOR — Reporter Maria Lockwood and photographer Jed Carlson stopped by Great Lakes Elementary School
on Nov. 11 for their Celebration of Service event.
It's the first time the school has organized the gathering since before the COVID-19 pandemic.
I love the photo Jed got of Vietnam veteran Jim White shaking hands with a child — it's a close-up of their hands reaching for each other, and it gave me goosebumps the first time I saw it. What a powerful shot.

World travelers Tom and Barb Agerter hiked 502 miles on the the El Camino de Santiago from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, to Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

Superior City Councilor
Warren Bender resigned Tuesday, Nov. 15.
Mayor Jim Paine asked Bender to step down following a police investigation into messages Bender sent to a woman that were deemed "inappropriate."
The City Council will meet Tuesday, Nov. 22, to decide how to fill Bender's seat.
Plates, ornaments and coasters have fallen victim to games of pepper at the Hessel household, where the rule "no balls in the house" does not apply.
Brynn Hessel, a senior middle blocker for the Northwestern Tigers and our 2022 Volleyball Player of the Year,
spoke to us about those games of pepper and the Tigers' season.
She's also part of our
2022 All-Area Volleyball Team
, along with six other local athletes.

holiday tree at Center City Park will be lit for the last time
Wednesday, Nov. 23 — officials plan to retire the tree after this season and plant a new one.
* A group of local parents has started
ConnectSPED to help families of children with diverse needs
. They held a meeting Tuesday and are planning more in the future.
