Dispatches from Douglas County: Business news, community rallies to support a local family and more

Jan. 27—SUPERIOR — It's good to be back!

Although I have to admit I'm not very excited about the sub-zero temperatures predicted for this weekend. Hopefully the weather doesn't dampen turnout at the

Lake Superior Ice Festival,

which kicks off today.

Here are more headlines for you to scope out:

The Eastman family tragically lost two members recently, 19-year-old Hailey, and retired K-9 officer Marik.

Family friend Laura Plewa started a GoFundMe page for the Eastmans — Superior Police Sgt. Nick Eastman, St. Luke's registered nurse Amanda Eastman and their daughter Hannah. In less than a week,

community members have donated more than $80,000.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Eastmans.

Customers of

Superior's Wine Beginnings

can now sit and sip a glass of wine at the shop. The city council approved a liquor license for the establishment in December.

That's not the only change for the business. Founder Kim Moen has sold the enterprise to her cousin, Donna Lorenz.

The Spartans showed off their sharpshooting skills

Tuesday, Jan. 24, as they notched a 66-23 victory over the Cloquet Lumberjacks.

* Reporter Shelley Nelson sat down with Mayor Jim Paine to learn more about his vision for the city. His next focus:

neighborhood business districts.

* Kelly Peterson, the new executive director of the Superior Business Improvement District,

let reporter Maria Lockwood tag along with her on a recent afternoon.

One of Maria's takeaways: wear comfortable shoes because Peterson is likely to be visiting businesses.

* There's another indoor play option for local kiddos.

Superior FunLand recently opened in the Mariner Business Center.
