District 115 Approves Substitute Teacher Pay Increase

YORKVILLE, IL – Three years after the Yorkville School District 115 Board of Education established a daily rate of $115 for substitute teachers, a pay increase was discussed during the board's Monday meeting at the Yorkville High School Library, according to district documents. From the discussion came a 7-0 vote from the board to approve an enhancement in substitute teachers' salaries, Kendall County Now reported.

"In light of the substitute shortage experienced across the state, the COVID-19 pandemic, and surrounding districts raising their daily rate to $125 per day, District 115 anticipates the shortage to become even greater for the coming school year, during a time when having substitutes available will become even more critical," the district board stated regarding reasons for the salary enhancement recommendation, in meeting documents.

According to district documents, the approved rate increase is $15, bumping substitute teachers pay up to $130 per day from $115, as well as an increased rate of $135 for substitutes after their 15th day substituting in the district. District documents also note the recommendation (now approved) includes an increase the district's long-term substitute rate from $165 per day to $185 per day, "for those individuals covering FMLA leaves and extended illnesses."
