Things didn't pan out exactly like the San Angelo Central High School Lady Cats were hoping Tuesday at the District 2-6A Girls Golf Tournament, but seniors Ryann Honea and Emily Coronado still managed to punch their tickets to regionals.

The Lady Cats had a one-shot lead over Midland Legacy and Odessa Permian after Monday's first round, but Central ended up finishing third to miss out on qualifying for regionals by one spot as a team.

Honea, the defending 6A state champion who has signed with the University of Louisville, was tied for first with Legacy's Sarah Reed in the medalist standings heading into the final round before Reed leapfrogged her for the title.

Reed shot 72-71--143 to beat Honea by six shots (72-77--149). Coronado (75-76--151) was two shots behind Honea in third.

Legacy shot 335--328--663 to take the team title by five shots, and Permian (335-333--668) was second. Central shot 334-338--672 to finish third.

The top two teams and top two individuals not on one of those qualifying teams advanced to the Region I-6A Tournament at Tangle Ridge Country Club in Arlington/Cedar Hill on April 20-21.

"It shows that every shot counts and that (quadruple bogey) that I had on (No.) 10 took a toll on us," Honea said. "It's just a lot to reflect on and learn from. I had a thought that I would advance to regionals and it wouldn't be my last high school tournament, but I just really wanted my team to go and, unfortunately, that didn't happen."

This was the first time in Honea's career that she wasn't able to win the district title. She took the crown as a freshman and junior. The tournament was canceled due to COVID her sophomore year in 2019.

Honea couldn't be more excited for Coronado to qualify for regionals for the first time in her career.

"I'm extremely happy and really proud of her," Honea said. "She's worked really hard and has come a long ways since her freshman year. I know this has been a dream of hers to advance to regionals and I'm excited that I get to do it alongside her."

Coronado had tears of joys when the medals were being handed out.

"I'm super excited," Coronado said. "All the hard work has finally paid off."

The Lady Cats had the advantage of playing district on their home course, but they weren't able to finish as strong as they started.

"The pressure was on, most definitely, but I believe in the team and I believe in myself and we did the best that we could," said Coronado, who won't be playing college golf.

Bentwood's course was showing its teeth more on Tuesday.

"The wind was blowing pretty hard today, but we got through it," Coronado said.

The Lady Cats' No. 2 player has waited a long time for the opportunity to compete at regionals.

"It feels amazing," Conorado said. "We've pushed each other a lot. (Ryann's) definitely pushed me to be my very best. She made me the player that I am today."

Rounding out the Lady Cats' scores were: Savannah Beaty (91-89--180), Abby Wetz (96-98--194) and Olivia Cooper (100-96--196).

The Lady Cats also had three individual medalists -- Micaela Falcon (92-101--193), Francesca Untalan (96-97--193) and Lilianna Lytle (109-110--219).

Central head coach Blake O'Dell provided his thoughts.

"Well, it just was not our day," the Lady Cats coach said. "We just could not get anything going. We had a few bad breaks out there that cost us a few strokes. I know the girls are disappointed. They have worked very hard all year, endured a lot, and they were hoping to advance to regionals as a team.

"But it is great that we have two advancing to regionals as individual medalists. Both have a shot at going to state where Ryann will defend her title from last year."

There were two holes-in-one during the tournament.

Permian's Daniella Muniz aced No. 12 on Tuesday, and Midland High medalist Keller Ray had an ace on No. 15 Monday.
