District 3-5A track: Plainview sends 11 athletes to area meet; girls finish third

Kayla Martinez and Ava Rushing each placed second in field events to help the Plainview girls track and field team to a third-place finish at the District 3-5A meet, which concluded Thursday at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo.

Overall, 11 Plainview athletes advanced to the Districts 3/4-5A area meet April 21 at Lowrey Field. The top four finishers in each event qualified.

Martinez measured 17 feet, 1½ inches in the long jump to take silver. Amarillo Tascosa's Saphina Stanley won the event at 17-5.

Rushing got second in the discus with a throw of 121-10. Tascosa's Sylvia Cardona had the winning throw of 127-2.

Mickaella Leal took third in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs to contribute to the Lady Bulldogs' 77 points. Amarillo, which ran away with the team titles on both sides, racked up 263 and Tascosa followed with 171.

The Golden Sandstorm netted 236½ points, with Tascosa (177½) and Amarillo Caprock (85) rounding out the top three in the boys division.

The Plainview boys were fourth with 64 points. Ryder Walter got second in the 200 in 22.25 seconds to lead the charge. Jerome Johnson was third in the high jump (6-feet), and the Bulldogs also placed third in the 800 relay.
