District 4-5A tennis: Coronado boys duo, Lubbock-Cooper's Gracie Wood advance to regionals

WOODROW — Lubbock-Cooper's Gracie Wood and Coronado's boys doubles team of Thomas Mann and Daniel Warraich each placed second in their respective division at the District 4-5A tennis tournament Wednesday to advance to regionals.

The Region I-5A tournament is set for April 10-11 at Texas Tech's McLeod Tennis Center.

Abilene Wylie's Kate Delgado beat Wood 6-1, 6-3 in the girls singles final. Wylie won four of the five divisions, including mixed doubles, which was an all-Bulldogs final. Wylie accounted for six of the 10 regional qualifiers.

Mann and Warraich also fell victim to the Bulldogs. Wylie's Connor Brown and Grant Bristow took the boys doubles title with a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 win.

Lubbock High's Andy Kyhm, the No. 4 seed in boys singles, gave himself a shot at a regional berth after beating Abilene Cooper's Josh Trujillo 7-5, 6-0 in the third-place match. But Wylie's Brandon Cowling won the playback match 6-3, 6-2 to bounce back from a final loss to Abilene High's Griffin Sullivan.

LHS' mixed doubles team of Sean Kyhm and Teema Sharif also just missed regionals. Wylie's Marshall McPherson and Carly Bontke won the playback 6-3, 6-2 over the unseeded Westerners.

Unseeded Greta Fankhauser and Jae Rike of Lubbock-Cooper fell in a playback as well. No. 4 Helena Bridge and Kaylee Connally of Abilene Cooper topped the Pirates' duo 6-3, 6-3 to nab the second girls doubles spot.
