District 5-2A track: Distance runs continue to power Plains boys

SUNDOWN — Long-distance races have been good to Plains this school year.

The Cowboys, who won the boys cross country Class 2A state championship in the fall, rode their distance prowess to a team title at the District 5-2A meet, which concluded Thursday at Slaughter Field.

Jhoan Menjivar led the charge with four gold medals, which included a win as he anchored the 1,600-meter relay to cap Plains' championship. The Cowboys finished with 148 points, besting runner-up New Home (120) and Post (111).

Menjivar won the long jump Wednesday and returned to win the 400 and 800 events. Plains, which reached state in the 1,600 relay last season, clocked in at three minutes, 27.19 seconds, to earn gold.

The Cowboys ran a 3:30.13 to place eighth at state.

Menjivar led a Plains 1-2-3 finish in the 800, with Rocky Garcia and Jeremiah Gonzales joining him on the podium. They teamed with Adrian Contreras in the 1,600 relay, and Garcia also placed second in the 400. Menjivar and Garcia each competed in the 800 at state last season.

Sawyer Hamilton won the 3,200 on Wednesday and placed second in the 1,600 the following day. Cowboys teammate Christian Sanchez followed in third in the 1,600.

New Home girls earn team title

Led by a pair of relay wins, the New Home girls took the team title Thursday.

MaKenna Johnson anchored all three relays, including the gold-medal 400- and 1,600-meter events. A day earlier, Johnson placed second in the triple jump. Kristen McWhirter placed second in the long jump, third in the 100 and ran on the 400- and 800 relays. The 800 team nabbed bronze.

Berkley Bass ran on all three relays as well, which accounted for 52 of the Lady Leopards’ 182 points. Tahoka, which won the 800 relay, placed second with 148, and Sundown (82) took third.

Tahoka sophomore Grace Reglin earned three individual golds over the two-day meet, including in the 100 and 200. She won the long jump on the opening day.

Payton Connor added to New Home’s total with gold in the shot put and silver in the discus. Sydney Snell won the 100 hurdles and got second in the 300 hurdles. Kyler Noble was the Lady Leopards’ other event winner, reaching 34-11 in the triple jump.
