District Football: John Glenn's Emerson, Sheridan's Munyan earn top honors

CAMBRIDGE — Strong regular seasons by area players were recognized, as the East and Southeast District football teams were released on Saturday.

The teams were selected by media members within the district, as the Times Recorder votes in the East District and does not have a vote in the Southeast District.

In Division IV, John Glenn junior wideout Colton Emerson and Meadowbrook senior quarterback Josh Hupp shared offensive player of the year honors with St. Clairsville's 6-7, 300-pound senior lineman Avery Henry, who is committed to Ohio State.

Emerson contributed in all phases, finishing with 756 yards and eight touchdowns on 58 receptions, while also averaging better than 10 yards on eight punt returns and grabbing five interceptions on defense in the regular season.

Hupp set school records for single-season total yardage (3,124), completions in a season (172) and completions in a game (31). He finished with 2,678 yards, 25 TDs and six interceptions and 446 yards and 12 TDs on 93 carries.

Meadowbrook senior linebacker Brady McManaway was the defensive player of the year. He had 80 tackles to lead the Colts’ defense and shined on offense with nearly 1,100 yards of offense and seven touchdowns.

Other area first-team offensive selections were John Glenn senior lineman Tuff Zemba; Philo seniors, quarterback Owen Smith and wide out Jaxson Radcliffe; Meadowbrook senior wide receiver Damen Launder and senior lineman Hayden Loy; Maysville junior running back Hayden Jarrett; and River View junior wide receiver Slater Sampsel.

The second-team offense included John Glenn senior quarterback Brad Morgan, senior running back Noah Wellmeier and senior kicker Angela Kumler; River View junior quarterback Carter Fry; Philo senior lineman Steel Hambel and junior wide receiver Cade Searls; Maysville senior lineman Garrett LaFollette; and Meadowbrook senior lineman Marshall Dyer.

Maysville senior lineman Gauge Samson; Meadowbrook senior defensive back Hunter Eubanks and punter Aiden Reis; John Glenn junior linebacker Nathan Walker and Philo junior linebacker Drew Lincicome highlighted the first-team defense.

John Glenn junior lineman Ethan Derwacter and junior defensive back Ian Glaub; Meadowbrook senior linebacker Kahle Flowers and senior defensive back Zane Maguire; Maysville senior linebacker Nate Harper and sophomore defensive back Wesley Armstead; and Philo junior linebacker Zach Savage made the second team defense.

Morgan had 1,417 yards with 18 touchdowns to three interceptions; Wellmeier had 502 yards and six scores in an injury-shortened season; Walker totaled 44 stops with four tackles for a loss and four pass breakups; Kumler made 30 of 32 extra points; Derwacter had 31 tackles and six for a loss; and Glaub made 22 tackles with six pass breakups and three picks to headline the Muskies’ choices.

Smith collected 1,561 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions through the air and added 661 yards and 14 TDs on the ground; Radcliffe totaled 29 receptions for 739 yards with eight scores; Lincicome had a team-best 112 stops with 11 for a loss; Savage had 94 tackles with 10 for a loss and five sacks; and Searls added 23 catches for 380 yards with four TDs for Philo.

Jarrett collected 1,136 yards and 11 scores on the ground to go with 200 yards receiving; Samson totaled 50 tackles, 20 for a loss and seven sacks; Harper finished with 67 tackles and averaged 23 yards on kickoff returns; and Armstead contributed 24 tackles, five pass breakups and two interceptions to highlight the Panthers’ selections.

Sampsel grabbed 35 passes for 636 yards with seven TDs and averaged 21 yards on 13 kickoff returns and Fry threw for 1,477 yards with 12 TDs and 10 interceptions for the Black Bears.

Launder hauled in 23 passes for 395 yards with five scores; Eubanks had 41 tackles and two interceptions and also caught 45 passes for nearly 600 yards with a pair of scores; Maguire had 47 tackles and Reis averaged 40 yards per punt for the Colts.

In Division III, Tri-Valley senior quarterback Drew Burkhart, senior wide receiver Jalen Goins-Chandler, senior lineman Jacob Kinder, junior defensive lineman Aaron Frueh, junior linebacker Hansel Holmes and junior defensive back Alex Williams, and Zanesville senior running back Jordan Martin, senior lineman Julian Jackson, senior defensive lineman Kanye Evans, senior linebacker Conner Wade and senior defensive back Brody Goldsmith were first-team selections.

Burkhart had more than 2,300 total yards, 1,793 passing, and accounted for 30 touchdowns, 23 passing; Goins-Chandler was the Scotties’ top wideout with 41 catches for 514 yards and six scores to with three interceptions on defense; Kinder shined on both lines with 26 tackles and 6 ½ sacks on defense; Frueh made 32 stops with six tackles for a loss, five sacks and two forced fumbles; Holmes collected 35 ½ tackles with 10 pass breakups; and Williams had 14 pass breakups and four interceptions.

Martin surpassed 1,000 yards with 12 touchdowns on the ground behind a line anchored by Jackson; Evans had 31 ½ tackles with 11 for a loss and 3 ½ sacks to go with scoring 10 touchdowns on offense; Wade had 41 stops with 6 ½ for a loss and 3 ½ sacks; and Goldsmith had 30 tackles, nine tackles for a loss and four pass breakups, along with more than 400 yards and three touchdowns on offense.

In Division V, West Muskingum senior quarterback Harley Hopkins, Coshocton senior running back Korbyn Haley, senior offensive lineman Brandon Crown and senior linebacker Isaac Shook, and Morgan junior offensive lineman Wade Pauley and senior defensive lineman Jarrell Hill made first team.

Coshocton senior quarterback Kobe Rust, senior lineman Landen Wince and sophomore defensive back Trey Cox, Morgan senior quarterback Levi Brown, sophomore receiver Kole Searl and junior punter Carson Copeland, and West Muskingum junior running back Ty Shawger, junior wide receiver Dylan Padgett, sophomore lineman Connor McKenzie, senior defensive lineman Thomas Ervin, sophomore linebacker Rashid Sesay and senior defensive back Jeremiah Miller were second-team selections.

Hopkins had 1,726 yards with 18 scores through the air and ran for 1,339 yards and 20 TDs, Shawger had nearly 600 total yards with a pair of rushing scores, Padgett hauled in a team-high 29 receptions for 526 yards with four touchdowns, Ervin collected four sacks, Sesay scored three defensive touchdowns and Miller had three interceptions for the Tornadoes.

Haley paced the Redskins’ running game with 854 yards and nine TDs and grabbed 19 passes for 200 yards and four touchdowns, along with averaging more than 23 yards on 10 kickoff returns, Shook anchored the defense with 82 tackles, five for a loss, Rust finished with 644 yards and eight touchdowns via the ground and 577 yards, seven scores and seven interceptions through the air

Hill made 33 stops with four for a loss, Brown threw for 1,155 yards and six touchdowns, Searl collected 38 passes for 467 yards with three scores and Copeland averaged nearly 40 yards per punt for the Raiders.

Rosecrans senior running back Rex Hankinson and senior linebacker Tommy Bernath earned first-team honors in Division VII, while sophomore quarterback Brenden Bernath, junior wide receiver Garrett Pugh and junior defensive back Weston Hartman made second team.

Hankinson churned up more than 1,100 yards with 11 touchdowns and 14 catches for 195 yards and a TD, Tommy made 81 tackles, 65 solo, with seven for a loss and three fumble recoveries, Brenden threw for 1,720 yards with 21 scores, Pugh grabbed 29 receptions for 600 yards with eight TDs and Hartman had 27 tackles, five tackles for a loss, five pass breakups and four interceptions to lead the Bishops.

Southeast District

Sheridan senior running back Jason Munyan, who set several school records, was tabbed the Division III offensive player of the year.

Munyan became the Generals' all-time leading rusher as well as setting records for career TDs and points scored for the program. He ran for 1,559 yards with 23 touchdowns on the ground, while averaging 36.5 yards per punt this season.

Sheridan senior offensive lineman Holden Bowen, senior linebacker Eli Gordon and junior defensive back Andrew Holden joined Munyan on first team, while teammates Corey Amspaugh and Hunter Zizek were special mention.

Holden Bowen excelled on both sides of the trenches as a two-year starter and three-year letter winner; Gordon led the Generals with 64 tackles with four tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles; and Andrew Holden grabbed four interceptions, had 45 tackles and four pass breakups and caught 18 passes for 387 yards with four TDs.

In Division V, New Lex junior wide receiver Tatem Toth made first team after catching 62 passes for 1,155 yards. He set school records for receiving yards in a game and for a season. Hunter Kellogg, who set a program record with 2,169 yards passing, and Zack Robinson were special mention.

In Division VI, Crooksville senior punter Noah Dickerson made first team after averaging 40.3 yards per punt with seven inside the 20, and senior wide receiver Ethan Sprankle was special mention with 40 catches for 350 yards and three scores and also made 89 tackles with six for a loss as a linebacker.
