The crowd attending the Georgia GOP’s 12th District Congressional District Convention held in Louisville Saturday, April 22 filled the county multipurpose building.

The 12th district encompasses 24 counties throughout south-central eastern Georgia, from Wilkes County at the northern tip as far south as Laurens and Montgomery counties and stretching from Effingham in the east to Washington County in the west.

“This convention was to elect leadership within the district and to also elect state committee members,” said District Chairman Mike Wiltse. “There are state committee meetings three or four times a year and they get to vote on decisions that are made at higher levels.”

The 12th district sends 11 committee members to the state, all of which were elected during the convention in Louisville. Leadership for the district and six more district committee members were also elected during the convention.

“I am so happy that we held this in Jefferson County. It’s a central location for most people in the 12th. The farthest anyone had to travel was an hour and a half,” Wiltse said. “That’s why we wanted to have it in Louisville, because it’s right in the center.”

The convention began at 10 a.m. and ran until about 1:30 p.m. United States Congressman Rick Allen (Dist. 12) spoke, as did Speaker of the House John Burns (Dist. 159) and Senator Max Burns (Dist. 23). Other representatives in attendance were Barry Fleming (Dist. 125) and Leesa Hagan (Dist. 156).

On April 12 Allen also spoke to a combined meeting of the Jefferson County Rotary and Kiwanis clubs in Louisville. At both events he spoke about his committee assignments for the 118th Congress, including his new appointment to the House Energy and Commerce Committee that has jurisdiction over 80 percent of the United States economy. Allen also pointed out several House Republicans' accomplishments during the first 100 days under a new majority, including legislation to jumpstart domestic energy production, ensure parents are actively involved in their child's education and efforts to roll back regulations impacting the agriculture industry.

“Jefferson County was very hospitable,” Wiltse said. “Everything went very smooth. I’d like to offer a special thanks to Alan and Ann York, he was the chair of arrangements committee, EMA Director Anderson, Jefferson County Administrator Jerry Coalson and the entire Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.”
