District Will Host Virtual Meetings About Reopening Schools

SANTA MONICA, CA — The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education will host a series of virtual town hall-style meetings this month and in July to share with parents three potential models for reopening schools in the fall. This will also be an opportunity for parents and staff to ask questions.

SMMUSD has developed three possible models for reopening schools in fall 2020 based on health guidelines, parent and staff survey results, and the district’s available resources.

District Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati is planning to share the three models in a letter in advance of the meetings.

The upcoming virtual town hall meeting dates are:

  • Santa Monica elementary school community members: June 30 at 6 p.m.

  • Santa Monica secondary school community members: July 1 at 6 p.m.

  • Malibu school community members: July 7 at 6 p.m.

"During these virtual meetings, staff will present the results of the parent and staff surveys and walk through the rationale and details associated with the three potential models for reopening schools," according to a district news release.

School districts across California are continuing to develop multiple reopening concepts as county health officials continue updating health guidelines.

"Additional details regarding the structure of the town hall meetings will be shared next week, including how to submit questions ahead of time," the district said.

The agendas for these three town hall meetings will be posted on the district’s website. The Zoom link for each meeting will be posted at the top of that date’s agenda.
