District to review Mt. Juliet High softball coach, Wilson County commissioner DUI charge

A Wilson County commissioner and Mt. Juliet High School coach is charged with DUI, implied consent and possession of a handgun while under the influence, according to court records.

Kevin Costley, 54, was booked into the Wilson County Jail on July 20 after being arrested by the Mt. Juliet Police Department.

Costley was stopped at the Kroger on North Mt. Juliet Road, a police report states. The stop occurred after an officer was dispatched to a non-injury accident in which a driver fled the scene, according to the report.

Attorney Jeff Cherry stated Costley was not involved in a vehicle crash before the stop. Costley was not charged with leaving the scene of a vehicle wreck. The stop was made because the officer observed the vehicle swerving, the report states.

The officer wrote in the report that Costley had red, glossed over eyes and a strong odor of an intoxicant. The loaded gun was found in the center console, and police conducted field sobriety tests.

Costley was elected to the county commission in 2018 and was reelected in 2022. Costley is the head softball coach at Mt. Juliet High School, where he is also an education assistant.

“District leadership is still gathering and receiving information regarding this incident,” Wilson County Schools Public Information Officer Bart Barker said.
