Two Columbia baseball teams are heading home for the year, one in upset fashion.

Hickman, the No. 2 seed in the Class 6 District 5 tournament, fell to No. 7 seed Fort Osage 2-0 Monday. Battle fell to No. 3 seed Blue Springs South later in the day.

Father Tolton and Rock Bridge won their games to advance.

Hickman came into the tournament as one of the hottest teams in the area. The Kewpies had won five straight and claimed the CMAC title for a second consecutive year.

Fort Osage's Evan Dixson snuffed that momentum with a complete-game win, allowing just one hit across seven innings.

Alex Hagan recorded the lone Hickman hit in the bottom of the third. Hagan reached third base but the Kewpies couldn't bring him home.

Fort Osage scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth. The Indians plated the game-winning run on a passed ball and scored another on a balk.

Hickman's season ends with a 22-10 record. The Indians move on to play Blue Springs South for a berth in the district title game.

The Jaguars eliminated Battle later in the day, scoring in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings to win 6-0. However, Blue Springs South needed one.

Tommy LaPour tossed a one-hit, complete-game shutout in the win over the Spartans. Assistant coach Bobby Baker pointed to the positives the team had on Monday, which included the Spartans coming back next year.

"We got a lot of people coming back," Baker said. "There's so many negatives always, so we focus on the positives."

There are 14 Battle juniors who will be seniors next year. The experience is crucial, especially when players watched Noah Fuller.

Fuller made two diving stops at third that were a fraction of a second away from being an out. Had he not made the stop, Blue Springs South would have gotten an extra-base hit. Baker said he used the seniors like Fuller and Seth Wray as examples this season.

"I point it out a lot," Baker said. "I use him as an example a lot. I use Seth as an example a lot."

Battle's season ends with a 10-16 record.

Rock Bridge rolled, eliminating Smith-Cotton 6-0. The Bruins scored four runs in the top of the third to lead 4-0 and never broke a sweat downing the CMAC-rival Tigers.

Rock Bridge moves on to play Blue Springs on Tuesday. Tolton will play South Callaway in the Class 3 District 7 championship game.
