A disturbance in the Atlantic has a medium chance of development, forecasters say

Forecasters are monitoring a disturbance in the Atlantic that has a medium chance of developing in the next five days as it moves away from the United States.

The nontropical low-pressure system, with gale force winds, was about 250 miles east-northeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center’s advisory at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

The system is expected to develop subtropical characteristics before merging with a front Tuesday afternoon. The system is then forecast to meander in the water, bringing wind and rain to parts of the mid-Atlantic and northeast U.S. coast through Wednesday, according to the hurricane center.

The disturbance is then forecast to move east, away from the U.S., where it will then move east or southeast over the warmer waters of the central Atlantic.

It has a 20% chance of formation in the next 48 hours and a 50% chance of formation in the next five days.

The next name on the 2021 Atlantic hurricane list is Wanda.
