CARNEY ISLAND — Dive teams remained at the Carney Island Recreation & Conservation Area on Wednesday, searching for a man who went missing on Tuesday in Lake Weir.

About 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Marion County Sheriff's Office received a call about a boat drifting on the lake. One of the four boaters was missing.

The Star-Banner originally reported that the man went overboard, but in a Facebook post on Wednesday the sheriff's office said he went missing while swimming.

"A total of three juveniles and one adult male were on a boat in the middle of the lake when two of the children and the adult went for a swim," the post says. "As the boat drifted away, one of the children retrieved the watercraft to pick up the other child and the adult male still in the water.

"Upon returning to the swimming area, the adult male was missing. The incident is being investigated as a possible drowning," the post says.

Teams from Marion County Fire Rescue, the sheriff's office, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Lake County Sheriff's Office were still searching for the man Wednesday afternoon.

The sheriff's office is asking people on Lake Weir to avoid areas that have an increased law enforcement presence.

"Boaters entering the search area are putting units in the water at risk and making the search more difficult," the Facebook post says. Anyone with information that might be helpful in the investigation should call 911.
