Hi, I’m digital design writer Zoë Sessums. Follow along each week as I try my hand at a DIY project in and around my house. I’ll cover the inspiration, expert advice, and step-by-step plans of everything from challenging builds to simple renovations. This month’s undertaking: a deck!

Earlier this summer, Yelp released a report of top backyard trends of 2021. Among the terms experiencing a meteoric rise in interest among consumers, the searches for outdoor decks were up 373% this year and increased by 64% between February and March. Turns out building and enjoying a deck wasn’t just something on my mind. Since Yelp tapped Jeremiah Brent, interior designer and star of HGTV’s Rock the Block, for his expert insights and tips, I knew he was the perfect person to source a little extra advice for my own deck-building journey—especially when it comes to adding those final touches and furnishings.

Seeing Brent’s use of materials for his screened-in porch made me think beyond basic planks of wood. From the checkered tiles to the painted ceiling, there are so many aesthetic considerations to make an outdoor space an extension of your interior home.

Zoë Sessums: You and Nate Berkus recently had a screened-in porch created at your home in Montauk, New York. Where did you find inspiration for the look and design?

Jeremiah Brent: When we were in Georgia filming Rock the Block, we ended up screening in the porch, creating another avenue for indoor-outdoor living for the future homeowners. We loved the way that space felt and began our Yelp search for Montauk contractors before we were even home from the competition. In the realm of design, we wanted the space to simply feel like an extension of our home. By carrying the same fabrics, tones, and finishes throughout, the transition between the spaces feels seamless.

Sessums: Do you have tips on where to splurge and when to save when creating a deck/porch?

Brent: Splurge on outdoor furniture, whether the cost is from buying new or recovering the cushions of well-made, vintage pieces. You want to be able to lounge and use the furniture for years to come, without worrying that the chair you’re sitting in could cave in at any minute. Quality pieces will stand the test of time, even with wear caused by natural elements.

A great way to overhaul your entire deck without breaking the bank is hiring a professional to stain the wood, creating an entirely new and refreshed space. Another place to save is on lighting: If you have the budget to hire a professional, adding recessed lighting along a railing or the steps of a deck or porch can add a lot to the area, but adding twinkle lights and lanterns is just as fun for a lighting upgrade. Yelp ensures that you can balance that expense and find professionals well within your budget for the project as a whole.

We aligned on our love of using natural elements. I was encouraged to use the landscape around my home—think lots of ferns, rock ledges, and evergreen trees—to influence the look and placement of my deck.

Sessums: What are your tips for outfitting an outdoor space? Do you have favorite sources to shop?

Brent: Embrace natural elements. Artisan vases and planters full of lush florals and branches accent the surrounding landscape. I love sourcing antique pieces from 1stdibs. You can find the most unique pieces, like 19th-century stone vessels from Spain, that add such depth and interest to your space.
