Report: DK Metcalf agrees to 3-year, $72 million extension with rebuilding Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks may no longer have Russell Wilson, but they should have DK Metcalf for a while.

The Pro Bowl wide receiver is signing a three-year, $72 million contract extension with $58.2 million guaranteed and a position-record $30 million signing bonus, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Metcalf is coming off another strong season for the Seahawks, with 967 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. In three NFL seasons, Metcalf has averaged 1,100 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns per year, playing every game possible and earning Pro Bowl honors in the 2020 season.

All of that was accomplished with Russell Wilson at quarterback, however, and the star quarterback's trade to the Denver Broncos means questions for both the Seahawks and Metcalf.

Wilson's deep passing prowess and Metcalf's elite athleticism (he ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash and posted a 40.5-inch vertical at 228 pounds at the NFL scouting combine) were a perfect combination, repeatedly stretching the field and connecting on long passes.

The Seahawks are now set to start either Geno Smith or Drew Lock, neither of whom are nearly as good as Wilson, but will at least benefit from a top weapon like Metcalf. The team is widely expected to go for a quarterback in next year's stacked class, but that means a less than fun experience this season.

At least it will now be a lucrative one for Metcalf.

The deal ends a standoff that continued even after Metcalf reported for training camp, as he did not take part in practice on Wednesday, an increasingly common tactic now known as a "hold in." A day later, the Seahawks apparently met Metcalf's price.

Metcalf's contract also continues what has been a red-hot market for wide receivers this offseason, with the $24 million average annual value tying him as the sixth-highest paid player at his position alongside Stefon Diggs. Four of the five players ahead of them — Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, DeAndre Hopkins, Cooper Kupp and A.J. Brown — have signed new deals since the most recent Super Bowl.
