DMV is bringing back Saturday hours but only at a few of its driver’s license offices

The state Division of Motor Vehicles will reopen some of its driver’s license offices on Saturday mornings ahead of its busy summer season.

Sixteen DMV offices that had been opened on Saturdays in the past will again see walk-in customers from 8 a.m. to noon starting this weekend. The 16 offices include two in Charlotte and one each in Durham, Raleigh, Huntersville and Monroe.

Summer is typically DMV’s busiest time of the year, in part because students take advantage of free time to try to get licenses before school starts in the fall.

DMV suspended Saturday hours in March 2020 because of the onset of the COVID 19 pandemic. It resumed Saturday services at the 16 offices in May 2021, then halted them again last Sept. 4, citing the need to reduce potential spread of the coronavirus during the surge caused by the delta variant.

Now, facing another summer season, DMV has decided to reopen the 16 offices for certain express services. These include driver’s license or ID card renewals, duplicate orders, address changes, REAL IDs and road tests for people who have already completed the knowledge and written tests.

DMV says it will maintain the Saturday hours through Aug. 27. The 16 offices include the ones on David Taylor Drive and West Arrowhead Road in Charlotte; South Roxboro Street in Durham; Spring Forest Road in Raleigh; Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road in Huntersville and U.S. 74 in Monroe.

Other offices open on Saturdays are found in Asheville, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Greenville, Hudson, Jacksonville, Morganton, Wilmington and Winston-Salem.

The DMV has 115 driver’s license offices open weekdays statewide. People are encouraged to make an appointment up to 90 days in advance, at www.ncdot.gov/dmv/, but walk-ins are welcome.

People can skip a trip to the DMV altogether by going online to renew or get duplicate licenses and IDs or apply for voter registration at www.ncdot.gov/dmv/offices-services/online/.
