DMV high school boys’ basketball rankings (1/19/24)

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Our top 25 high school boys’ basketball teams in the DMV as voted on by the DC News Now sports department. Rankings as of 9 p.m. Friday.

1. Paul VI (14-2)

PVI starts as our top team in the DMV. Wins over Sidwell, IMG Academy, and Link Academy. Their only two losses coming to the top two teams in the nation.

2. DeMatha (15-4)

DeMatha slots in at No. 2. Recently, the Stags have defeated WCAC foes Bishop O’Connell and Bishop McNamara.

3. Bishop O’Connell (14-3)

Bishop O’Connell has had a solid start to their season. Wins over Gonzaga and nationally-ranked Oak Ridge, however their recent loss to DeMatha keeps the Knights at No. 3 in our rankings.

4. Gonzaga (14-2)

The Gonzaga Eagles slot in at No. 4 in our rankings. Solid wins over Jackson-Reed, St. John’s and nationally-ranked Westminister Academy. Their only two losses come to Bishop O’Connell and Montverde Academy.

5. St. John’s (15-3)

St. John’s rounds out the top 5 that includes all WCAC teams. The defending WCAC champs have losses to Gonzaga, nationally-ranked John Marshall from Richmond, and Grayson from Georgia.

6. Jackson-Reed (20-2)

Jackson-Reed starts this season at No. 6 in our rankings, and our highest ranked non-WCAC team. The Tigers recently beat nationally-ranked Bullis.

7. Bullis (13-2)

Wins over Sidwell and IMG Academy have Bullis at No. 7. The Bulldogs would have been higher, but the recent loss to Jackson-Reed lands them one spot below the Tigers.

8. Sidwell Friends (12-4)

Sidwell’s four losses have all come to nationally-ranked teams, including Paul VI and Bullis.

9. Georgetown Prep (13-2)

Solid start to the season for Georgetown Prep, having wins over St. Andrew’s, Bishop McNamara, and Maret. Their two losses have come to two top 10 teams in our rankings: Sidwell and Gonzaga.

10. Bishop McNamara (9-5)

The Mustangs are ranked just outside our top 10, but will have their chances to move up in the upcoming weeks, with games against Gonzaga, St. John’s and Bishop O’Connell before the end of the month.

11. Archbishop Carroll (11-7)

Carroll has impressive wins over Fairfax Christian, Riverdale Baptist and Bowie. However, the Lions have suffered losses to three of our top 10 teams, landing them right outside the top 10.

12. Fairfax Christian (22-2)

The Cardinals would be higher on the list, however, a recent loss to Archbishop Carroll slots Fairfax Christian in at No. 12.

13. Largo (11-1)

Last year’s MPSAA 2A runners-up start the year 11-1, with their lone loss being to St. John’s.

14. Mount Zion Prep (20-7)

A strong start to the season by Mt. Zion Prep has been overshadowed with the recent losses to John Marshall, Fairfax Christian, Lanham Christian and Dynamic Prep. The Warriors were 20-3 at one point this season, and have now lost four straight.

15. Grace Brethren (18-2)

Grace Brethren has wins over Shabach, Mt. Zion Prep and Patriot. However, losses to Highland and St. Mary’s Ryken has the Eagles at No. 15.

16. Bishop Ireton (8-4)

With losses to Gonzaga, DeMatha, and two out-of-town teams, Bishop Ireton comes in at No. 16. The Cardinals will have plenty of chances to prove themselves once the get into the thick of WCAC play.

17. Shabach Christian Academy (15-10)

Shabach has plenty of losses to teams from outside the DMV. With their only local losses coming to Grace Brethren and Mt. Zion Prep, the Eagles come in at No. 17.

18. Gwynn Park (11-0)

Gwynn Park is one of two teams unbeaten in our rankings. We will find out how good the Yellowjackets are next week when they take on Largo.

19. St. Andrew’s Episcopal (10-5)

With losses to Georgetown Prep. Sidwell, St. John’s and Landon, St. Andrew’s opens up at No. 19 in our rankings, a similar spot to last year.

20. Frederick (10-4)

Frederick had a hot start to the season, but since then, has cooled down a bit. With recent losses to Urbana and Goretti, the Cadets come in at No. 20.

21. Patriot (10-4)

The defending VHSL Class 6 runners-up are one of the favorites to win a state title this season. After picking up a couple losses outside their conference, the Pioneers have now won five of their last six.

22. South Lakes (12-2)

South Lakes looks to be one of the teams that will contend with Patriot for the VHSL Class 6 crown. The Seahawks get a big test Saturday, as they host Largo.

23. Alexandria City (11-3)

Alexandria City is off to a strong start to the season. 11-3, but more importantly, undefeated so far in a tough Patriot District.

24. Potomac Falls (14-0)

The other undefeated team in our rankings besides Gwynn Park. The Panthers start 14-0, and are cruising through their district schedule as of now.

25. Maret (13-4)

Maret rounds out our top 25. The Frogs are 13-4, with wins over Coolidge and Sandy Spring Friends.
