DMV high school boys’ basketball rankings (1/26/24)

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Our top 25 high school boys’ basketball teams in the DMV as voted on by the DC News Now sports department. Rankings as of 12 p.m. Friday.

1. Paul VI (16-2) – Last week: 1

Dominant win over Gonzaga this week. Big game Friday on the road vs. Bishop O’Connell.

2. Bishop O’Connell (15-3) – Last week: 3

O’Connell moves up to No. 2 in our rankings. They will get a shot at moving to No. 1 as they host PVI Friday.

3. Gonzaga (15-3) – Last week: 4

Lost to PVI this week, but also beat St. Mary’s Ryken in a blow out.

4. St. John’s (16-3) – Last week: 5

Big win this week for the Cadets, defeating DeMatha by five.

5. DeMatha (15-5) – Last week: 2

DeMatha drops four spots after a five point loss to St. John’s.

6. Jackson-Reed (22-2) – Last week: 6

Easy week for Jackson-Reed, blowing out Bell and Bard.

7. Bullis (15-2) – Last week: 7

Bullis remains at No. 7 with wins over 1-of-1 Academy and Landon.

8. Sidwell Friends (14-4) – Last week: 8

Sidwell pick up two more wins in the past week, their biggest one over Fairfax Christian in blow out fashion.

9. Georgetown Prep (15-2) – Last week: 9

Georgetown Prep remain in the top 10 after going 2-0 this past week.

10. Clinton Grace Christian (22-2) – Last week: 15

Clinton Grace (formerly Grace Brethren) had an impressive week of basketball. Wins over Fairfax Christian, Highland and St. Andrew’s. With those wins, Clinton Grace cracks the top 10.

11. Bishop Ireton (10-4) – Last week: 16

A nine-point win over Archbishop Carroll and a one-point win over Bishop McNamara has Bishop Ireton up five spots at No. 11.

12. Fairfax Christian (22-4) – Last week: 12

Losses to Highland, Sidwell and Clinton Grace. However, the Cardinals remain at No. 12.

13. Bishop McNamara (11-8) – Last week: 10

After suffering two losses this week, one to Bishop Ireton, Bishop McNamara drops three spots in our rankings.

14. Archbishop Carroll (12-8) – Last week: 11

Lost to Bishop Ireton by nine. Due to the loss, Archbishop Carroll falls to No. 14.

15. Mount Zion Prep (20-9) – Last week: 14

Mount Zion Prep drops two games, and with that, drops one spot in our rankings.

16. Gwynn Park (14-0) – Last week: 18

Gwynn Park defeats Largo and Fairmont Heights on back-to-back nights on back-to-back buzzer-beaters. Still undefeated on the season, and now up at No. 16.

17. Largo (11-2) – Last week: 13

Tough loss at the buzzer by Gwynn Park drops Largo four spots to No. 17.

18. Shabach Christian Academy (15-11) – Last week: 17

Shabach fell to southern Virginia powerhouse St. Anne’s Bellfield by three points. It’s the Eagles eleventh loss of the season.

19. St. Andrew’s Episcopal (12-6) – Last week: 19

Lost by two to Clinton Grace, however, beat a solid Maret squad easily. The Lions stay at No. 19.

20. Patriot (12-4) – Last week: 21

2-0 week for Patriot with wins over Forest Park and Evergreen Christian.

21. Frederick (11-4) – Last week: 20

Frederick improves to 11-4 on the season after defeating Gov. Thomas Johnson by eight.

22. South Lakes (13-2) – Last week: 22

South Lakes had a few games canceled last weekend. Only one game this past week, and they won by nine over Madison to remain unbeaten in the Concorde District.

23. Potomac Falls (16-0) – Last week: 24

Potomac Falls is one of two unbeaten teams remaining, defeating Lightridge by six and Briar Woods by ten.

24. Cardozo (15-1) – Last week: honorable mention

Cardozo cracks our top 25 after a win over Anacostia.

25. West Potomac (13-4) – Last week: honorable mention

West Potomac comes in at No. 25 in our rankings. The Wolverines pick up a big win over South County.
