DNR Free Fishing Days highlight 5 things to do in or near Lawrence County this weekend

Wet a line, tap your toes to a bluegrass tune, lace up those running shoes or listen to the sweet sound of an antique engine. We've turned the calendar to June and while the first weekend of the month isn't as full as Memorial Day weekend, you can still find something to do.

Take your pick from an assortment of happenings in the Times-Mail area this weekend.

DNR Free Fishing Days

The second offering of the Department of Natural Resources Free Fishing Days are Saturday and Sunday. On Free Fishing Days, Indiana residents do not need a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp to fish the state's public waters. All other rules such as seasons, bag and size limits apply.

Free Fishing Days are a great way to learn how to fish or take your family fishing.

Some DNR properties are having special activities.

  • At Patoka Lake in Birdseye, kids ages 12 can join in a bank fishing tournament. Meet at 8:30a.m. to register at Osborn Boat Ramp off State Road 145. Fishing begins at 9 a.m. Bring fishing poles, tackle and live bait.

  • Paynetown SRA at Lake Monroe will have a Youth Fishing Derby from 8 to 10 a.m. at the fishing dock. No check-ins after 9:15 a.m. Ages 16 and under can participate in the free event. Borrow our equipment or bring your own; bait will be provided. A prize drawing will be held at 10 a.m. New and beginning anglers are welcome; volunteer instructors will be on hand.

Springville Community Academy Spring Fest

Spring Fest, a fundraiser for the new charter school begins at 8 a.m. Saturday with the Hornet Hustle 5K followed by a pancake breakfast from 9-11 a.m.

Shop the vendor market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and kids can enjoy a carnival and games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

At noon, bid on a homemade picnic lunch during the Picnic Lunch Auction. Winners can enjoy their lunch in the school courtyard while listening to Greg Baker and Family play music. Also on tap is a Kiss a Pig contest and 3-on-3 basketball tourney.

All activities take place at the school, located on State Road 54 in Springville.

John Hartford Music Festival at Lawrence Co. Rec Park

This bluegrass festival opened Wednesday and ends Saturday. Organizers moved the John Hartford Music Festival to the Lawrence County Recreational Park in Springville from its previous setting in Brown County. The festival is a tribute to John Hartford, Grammy-winning musician and songwriter who wrote "“Gentle on my Mind” and contributed to the “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack.

Tony and Greg Unplugged

Tony Hopkins and Greg Morris will play acoustic versions of classics by the Beatles, James Taylor and other artists at 7 p.m. Friday at Pub 15 on the north side of the downtown Bedford square.

Antique Farm Machinery Show

The 13th annual Jackson County Antique Farm Machinery Show is June 3-4 at the Jackson County Fairgrounds in Brownstown.

The show will feature Allis Chalmers tractors, garden tractors and equipment. All makes and models are welcome.

COVID-19 tracker: Lawrence County's cases up 22%; Indiana cases up 7.9%.

Admission is $2 for adults, kids 12 and younger admitted free. Veterans admitted free June 3. Activities begin at 9 a.m. each day and include a kids pedal pull, hit and miss engines, live demonstrations, barrel train rides, flea market, silent auction, wrench throw and skillet toss.
