DoAbilene! calendar: Feast of Sharing, gospel concerts Tuesday

After two years feeding a holiday meal to Abilenians via a drive-up setup, the H-E-B Feast of Sharing is back to an in-person event at the Abilene Convention Center.

Dinner will be served from 4-8 p.m. in the exhibition hall. There is no charge.

The meal traditionally has been ham, potatoes and vegetables, along with pie for dessert. Refreshments also are served.

There is entertainment, too.

In the past, thousands have been served and a line has formed before the event begins.

ACU gospel choir at the holidays

The student multi-cultural gospel choir at Abilene Christian University will perform twice this week.

Led by voice professor Samuel Cook, the group will sing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Macedonia Baptist Church, 608 North Seventh St., and at the same time Wednesday at Boone Family Theatre on campus.

The group performed during the Christmas season in 2021.

The concerts are part of a busy week for Cook, who dueted Saturday evening with Broadway singer Niki Scarlera at the Abilene Philharmonic's holiday pops concert.

On Sunday, Cook will join other vocalists for a performance of "Messiah" by Abilene Opera Association at the Paramount Theatre

NEXT Lab town hall is Tuesday night

A town hall meeting focusing on the neighborhood impact of a nuclear energy facility currently under construction is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Hunter Welcome Center on the ACU campus.

The facility - the Nuclear Energy eXperimental Testing (NEXT) Lab - is being built on the former campus intramural field that adjoins the former Taylor Elementary School campus.

Those who live near the campus and others in the community who are interested in the project are invited.

Speakers will be Dr. Rusty Towell, the lab director and ACU professor of physics and engineering; Blair Schroeder, ACU's chief planning officer; and Dr. Rusty Kruzelock, vice president of research.

The NEXT lab is a collaboration with Georgia Tech, Texas A&M and the University of Texas at Austin to design, license and commission a molten salt research reactor on the ACU campus.

The 28,000-square-foot facility is where students and faculty to study how new technology will assist in addressing not only energy needs but those sought in the medical field.
