Doane no-hits Dakota Wesleyan to clinch softball sweep

Apr. 25—CRETE, Neb. — A pair of big fourth innings sent Doane past Dakota Wesleyan in a Great Plains Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday.

Doane scored three runs in the fourth to score a 5-1 win in Game 1 and five in the fourth to win 8-0 in Game 2, as Shelby Downard and Ashley Jacobson combined for a no-hitter to sweep the Tigers.

DWU (9-21, 1-13 GPAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1 as Nora Nelson drove in Reagan Nebel with an RBI single, but Megan Elliott's solo home run knotted the game in the bottom of the second and a sacrifice fly took the lead in the third.

Done's Kayla Miller singled to drive in a run in the fourth, while Haley Kennedy singled to bring in a run and an error plated two more.

Mitchell native Haley Like went 2-for-3 for DWU, as did Alexys Durham. Meghan Daffern took the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.

Doane's Josie Schankenberg picked up the win by allowing one earned run on eight hits in seven innings.

Holding a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth, Doane (22-21, 9-9) scored five runs on seven hits, including a two-run double by Shelby Downard. Miller went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the game, while Elliott was 2-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs.

Meanwhile, Downard did not allow a hit and walked two, while striking out four in four innings. Jacobson was perfect in one inning of relief.

Alyssa Burke took the loss for DWU, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

The Tigers travel to Jamestown for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Jamestown, North Dakota.
