Doctor Who boss's new show reveals cast including Ted Lasso star

Douglas Is Cancelled, the new show from former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, has announced its star-studded cast.

As per Variety, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy), Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington) and Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso) have all joined the cast for the comedy-drama, which will centre on cancel culture.

The series will follow Douglas Bellowes (Bonneville), a respected news anchor whose life is thrown upside down after an ill-advised joke is heard at a wedding. Douglas's career is subsequently on the line, with a guest threatening to expose his remark to the wider public.

Gillan will star as Madeline, Douglas's "canny" sidekick who has expertise in social media relations, but will she use her knowledge to help her colleague or further her own career?...

Mohammed's role is currently undisclosed, with the central trio being joined in the cast by Ben Miles, Alex Kingston and Simon Russell Beale. Ben Palmer, best known for his work on The Inbetweeners, is directing all four episodes.

"To torment a man, let alone a man named Douglas, for four episodes — armed with the writing of Steven Moffat – is a great privilege that I'm going to enjoy every minute of," said Gillan, who previously played Amy Pond during Moffat's era of Doctor Who.

"Working again with a director like Ben, on Steven's acidly witty script, with an ensemble of this calibre, is as daunting as it is exciting," said Bonneville, with Moffat revealing the project was written in secret.

"I just sat down and wrote this. Didn't even tell anyone what I was doing. And now it's all happening," he said. "I can't quite believe we've managed to get the mighty Hugh Bonneville involved and that we've lured my old friend Karen Gillan back from Hollywood."

Doctor Who returns for three 60th-anniversary specials, beginning with 'The Star Beast' on November 25. The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.
