Doctor drove 106 mph before crash killed 22-year-old student, Nebraska cops say

The early-September death of an occupational therapy student was caused by a doctor driving more than 100 mph, according to Nebraska police and news reports.

Dr. Mark Carlson, 61, is now reportedly charged with manslaughter following the crash in Omaha. Carlson is a professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and is a staff surgeon with the Veterans Administration.

The crash happened at 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 1 near the University of Nebraska Omaha campus. Anna Bosma, a 22-year-old who recently graduated from college, was killed in the crash, police said.

Police said Carlson was driving 106 mph “with his foot completely on the pedal” before he struck a light pole, according to court documents obtained by KETV.

His vehicle then crossed four lanes of traffic, crashing into a Chevrolet Cruze being operated by Bosma, the Omaha World-Herald reported. Bosma died at the scene, according to police.

It’s believed that Carlson “was involved in either a road rage or road racing incident” before the fatal crash, WOWT reported, citing court documents.

Carlson remained in a hospital as of Wednesday, Sept. 13, and will be jailed after his release, prosecutors told the World-Herald.

Bosma, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, was in Omaha visiting her boyfriend, according to WOWT. The boyfriend was also in Bosma’s vehicle and was taken to a hospital, KETV reported.

A recent graduate from South Dakota State University, Bosma had entered into the occupational therapy doctorate program at the University of South Dakota, according to an obituary.

The obituary says Bosma had a love for animals and was joyful with a giving nature.

“She was such a genuine person, and she loved, like, she just loved everything and everyone,” Jayden Leisinger, a friend of Bosma’s, told KETV. “She took advantage of every single second of her life, and she really made it count.”
