Doctor performs CPR to save Traverse City hockey player

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Michigan high schooler is alive after suffering a serious spine and neck injury during a game last weekend in Cadillac.

News 8 affiliate UpNorthLive reports Brady Lewis, a sophomore on Traverse City West High School’s varsity hockey team, suffered the injury during a game Friday against Cadillac at the Wexford County Civic Center.

Another affiliate, 9&10 News, says a doctor on site performed CPR and stabilized Lewis before he was rushed to a hospital. He underwent surgery on Saturday and will be in a halo brace for several weeks but is on the road to a full recovery.

The school’s Facebook page shared a statement from the Lewis family to give an update on the teen’s condition.

“We cannot express how thankful we are for the quick-thinking Cadillac and Traverse City parents who immediately acted, performed CPR and saved Brady’s life,” the statement read. “We would especially like to thank Dr. Mark Munro who we are so thankful for and so thankful that he was at the game leading the effort. We also thank the wonderful team at the Cadillac hospital that stabilized Brady and took such good care of all of us.”

UpNorthLive reports the team returned to practice Monday and will decide whether to play their final regular season game scheduled for Wednesday in Gaylord. Postseason play will start next week.
