Former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has said his iconic role as the Time Lord was akin to being in “the centre of a storm”.

The star, who played the Twelfth Doctor between 2014 and 2017 before handing the reins over to Jodie Whittaker, reflected on his tenure in an interview with The Guardian.

“There aren’t a lot of people who have been in that role in the centre of that storm,” he began. “Most people think the job is being on the Tardis and running around with Daleks. Which it is. That’s the fun part.

“But there’s a lot of other stuff you have to do, too. You’re kind of the face of the brand and the brand is very big. You can’t be the cynical melancholic I naturally am. You have to pretend to be a version of yourself that’s far more amenable.

“You embody for a time this folk hero, this icon. I was able to comfort people in a way that would be beyond the powers of Peter. You could walk into a room and people gasped with delight. It doesn’t happen any more.”

The recent trilogy of specials, which commemorated the 60th anniversary of the show, saw David Tennant reprise his role – of sorts – alongside Catherine Tate, but Capaldi recently ruled out a return to the show.

“No,” he said when asked. “I'm a long-standing Doctor Who fan from being a kid. [Criminal Record character Daniel] Hegarty is the same age as me, so maybe he watched Doctor Who, too.

“He’s of that era. I like the idea that my Doctor is still out there. He's not available to come and be on television. The real Doctor is not on TV, the real Doctor is out there,” he added.

Doctor Who will return for its 14th series this spring. The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.

Classic episodes of Doctor Who are now made available via BBC iPlayer in the UK as well.
