The hit Doctor Who podcast is returning for the franchise's 60th anniversary.

Doctor Who: Redacted originally premiered last year, taking the form of a true-crime-style podcast called The Blue Box Files where three friends investigated the mysterious appearances of a "big blue box" throughout the years.

The amateur investigators (newcomer Charlie Craggs as Cleo, Vigil's Lois Chimimba as Abby and ex-Coronation Street star Holly Quin-Ankrah as Shawna) ended up meeting The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) face-to-face when they uncovered the existence of a psychic virus.

This time around, Cleo is still determined to investigate the travels of the "big blue box", but also feels like a third wheel in her friend group as Abby and Shawna have now coupled up.

As Cleo questions some of her life choices, she's swept off her feet by the sudden arrival of the spaceman Apex Costa (Shadow and Bone's Freddy Carter) — but is there more to this interplanetary visitor than meets the eye?

The second season of Doctor Who: Redacted features an impressive group of guest stars, including Anjli Mohindra reprising her role as Rani Chandra from The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Rani has had encounters with The Doctor in the past as well, so she could certainly be of some assistance in the Blue Box Files team's research.

Other guest stars this year include Alexander Armstrong as the voice of Sarah Jane Smith's supercomputer Mr Smith, Good Omens' Maggie Service, Bridgerton's Teri Ann Bobb-Baxter and Vikings: Valhalla's Sam Stafford.

Juno Dawson is once again the lead writer on Doctor Who: Redacted, this time joined by fellow writers Chris Cornwell, Karissa Hamilton-Bannis and Ken Cheng. Bethany Weimers directs the season.

Doctor Who: Redacted will return for weekly episodes on BBC Sounds from September 18.

The return of the podcast precedes three 60th anniversary specials starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, leading into the debut of Ncuti Gatwa for an all-new series next year.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
