Doctor Who has released new behind-the-scenes footage of David Tennant's surprise regeneration.

At the end of the centenary episode, which marked Jodie Whittaker's last outing as The Doctor, Tennant was revealed as the Fourteenth Doctor in an unexpected regeneration.

In a special behind-the-scenes video, fans have been treated to an exclusive look at how the iconic scene was filmed. Recorded in May 2022 at Wolf Studios Wales in Cardiff, the video shows Tennant preparing to make his top-secret return.

"I've no idea what's going on in this scene. All I know is that I turn up at the end of it," he said on the set. "I've not been allowed to see anything else. It's all a mystery to me."

The director of the 'Power of the Doctor' special only filmed Whittaker's part of the regeneration, leaving new director Rachel Talalay to film a seamless transition from the original footage to Tennant months later.

"They wanted to make sure we saw the clothes and saw them change within the regeneration energy and then end on David's face," Talalay explained, leaving the writers to come up with a logical reason as to why the Doctor's clothes had changed.

Ahead of filming the scene, Tennant was seen in the video saying he was going to approach his second regeneration "exactly as I did last time".

Discussing the importance of Doctor Who's regeneration episodes, he recalled the memory of watching them as a child: "I remember as a kid those moments when the Doctor changed, it was mind-blowing!

"Inconceivably exciting that it was the beginning of a new chapter for this show that I loved so much, so you want to try and remember that when you're at the other side of it, telling that story."

Tennant will make his anticipated return in three 60th-anniversary specials alongside Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, ahead of Ncuti Gatwa's debut as the iconic Time Lord.

Doctor Who returns later in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on Max.
