Jodie Whittaker is set to star in One Night, a thriller series for Paramount+, which marks her first TV role after exiting Doctor Who.

Following her departure from the BBC show, the Broadchurch star has now temporarily relocated to Australia to play one of the three leads in this female-centred series.

Whittaker stars as Tess, reunited with her childhood best friends Hat (Orange is the New Black's Yael Stone) and Simone (Nicole da Silva) when the latter publishes a novel whose traumatic, real-life story threatens to evoke terrible memories.

One Night is "the story of three women whose bond was all but destroyed by the traumatic events of one night 20 years ago," as per Paramount's official synopsis.

Producers Ian Collie, Rob Gibson and Ally Henville of Easy Tiger Productions described the show as a "gripping, character-driven mystery".

Set against the backdrop of the New South Wales coastline, the six-part series "explores the boundaries of friendship and question our understanding of memory, trauma, and storytelling itself".

Filming for the series has begun in Sydney and the Illawarra region, but there doesn't seem to be an official release date at present.

Whittaker made history when she took on the role of the first female Doctor in Chris Chibnall's series in 2017.

She recently bowed out in a Doctor Who special titled 'The Power of the Doctor,' giving way to David Tennant's surprise appearance as the Fourteenth Doctor.

The beloved sci-fi series will welcome Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor later this year, with returning showrunner Russell T Davies at the helm.

Doctor Who returns in 2023 on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere. Meanwhile, in the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max. Classic Doctor Who streams on BritBox in the UK.
